“The dark door—was this a memory of the heavy oak door to our apartment in Zoppot that the Nazi storm-troopers had kicked open in 1938? Can I open this door? Can I enter to move with the river toward the lost horizon, the unattainable distance? Or is the door locked, shutting me out? Perhaps it is and it isn’t.”
