“Klement creates a sort of painterly poetry; others have pointed out her love of poetry, her references to poets and poems. Her work of the 1990s were dubbed “poem-paintings” by the art historian Donald Kuspit 1. Her figures, as in Birches/Embrace of 1994 seem to spring more from the poetic imagination than the painterly realm. They are languid, yet muscled and imperative; they are sensual, yet incomplete.”

Lynn Warren
Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago 2004, catalog essay
